After losing to Magno in the semifinals of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and having to settle for bronze, Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong got her revenge with a 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27 victory.

On Sunday, August 1, Jitpong will play in a Quarterfinal match.

The Thai started off strong, landing a good right jab within the first minute. For the majority of the first round, the Filipina had little to say, but in the final ten seconds, she let loose with a right.

Magno had a hard time catching up to Jitpong in the second round since she was again able to outrun her.

The Iloilo fighter had nothing to lose in the deciding round, so she made an effort to trouble Jitpong. However, the Thai fighter was on a roll and easily won the fight.

The first of the four Filipino boxers to compete in the Tokyo Olympics, Magno had to withdraw early.

On Saturday, July 31, world champion Nesthy Petecio will compete in the women’s featherweight semifinal, Carlo Paalam will continue in the men’s flyweight round of 16, and on Sunday, August 1, Eumir Marcial will fight in the quarterfinals of the men’s middleweight division after winning via referee stoppage.

Magno became the first Filipina boxer in Olympic history when she won a box-off for one of six spots in the women’s flyweight class at the Asia and Oceania qualifiers.

Magno has competed for his country in three of the previous four SEA Games, collecting a bronze medal at bantamweight in 2013 and silver medals at flyweight in both 2015 and 2019.
