McEwen’s childhood home was on a quiet street in Abbeville, Mississippi. He was frolicking in the backyard.

“I realised around the time I was in the second grade, ‘wow, I can jump,'” McEwen recalled.

We Splurged and got him a Trampoline.

“Shelby got out there one day and was just jumping, jumping, jumping, and he busted his skull big open, burst it wide open,” Sharon McEwen, McEwen’s mother, recalled.

We rushed him to the hospital, but after a few days he was out on the field bursting it again. And at that moment, I realised that he could actually jump.

As a child, Shelby’s main interest was in basketball. As early as eighth grade, he was scoring in the paint for his team.

He participated in both track and basketball at Oxford High School, though he preferred the latter. He travelled the country playing AAU basketball. It was in Las Vegas, of all places, where he showed the world he had hops.

Taking first Place at the 2014 Jordan Brand Dunk Contest.

It was a turning point in my life when I jumped from the FT line, having told myself I was only going to take off without knowing I’d take off behind the line. McEwen stated, “That day, everything shifted.”

After failing to make the Northwest Mississippi basketball team, he opted for the Junior College Athletic Association. When he began competing in collegiate meetings as an independent athlete, he soon understood that the high jump was where his future lay.

As he put it, “offers started coming in” after that. After finishing junior college, I vowed to myself that I would play in the Southeastern Conference forever. I made up my mind then to go the T&F way.

“I told him, ‘Son, you’re excellent at basketball, but if you want to earn that division one scholarship, get that education, go ahead and do the track and field, because you’re already well up here in track,'” Sharon recalled.

McEwen chose Alabama, where he won the high jump title twice at the SEC Championships and once at the National Championships.

Following commencement, he enrolled in Olympic training classes at the University of Louisville. He was in the midst of training in Mississippi when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

There was a dramatic change. McEwen admitted, “I had to confront a little difficulties.” “I had some trouble doing well indoors, but I finally forced myself to stop making excuses and just get it done. Never doubted who was on my side.

His Parents were the Driving Forces behind him Finally Making it to Tokyo.

Shelby’s trainer in Louisville would email him the week’s workouts on Sundays. Every day, Sharon would accompany her son to the track to aid with his training.

“As a mother, I was in a state of complete fear for a few of months,” she admitted. Finally, I told myself, “OK, I can do this. I’d rather be here doing this than having him go out and socialise with strangers.

They Shared in the Fruits of their Labour.

While competing in May, Shelby achieved a new best of 2.33 metres, a new personal best. The world’s third-best high jumper is now trained by him. His words from the week before the Olympic trials.

There is no need for me to worry about failing to meet the Olympic standard because I already have it. Looking forward to shocking the world out there, competing hard, placing in the top three, and qualifying for the Olympic team.

Shelbi is indeed doing it. When he placed third in the finals of the men’s high jump, he qualified to compete for Team USA at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
