The Australians advanced to the semifinals thanks to goals from Alanna Kennedy (a pinpoint header), Sam Kerr (a brace as captain), and Mary Fowler (a goal as a teenager).

“I can’t even begin to express how honoured I feel to serve as the team’s leader. They take me by surprise every single day “Kerr revealed after the heated contest.

“We have youngsters out there, we have Mary [Fowler], who is 18 years old, and I am just so proud of everyone,” she said.

Teagan Micah, a goalkeeper for Australia who recently earned her national team cap, also had an outstanding game.

She made seven saves, which is tied for the most by any goalkeeper at the Women’s Olympic Tournament so far.

Kerr, who is now tied for the Matildas’ all-time goal scoring record, expressed pride in her team’s ability to overcome adversity by defeating some of the world’s best despite not having played together for a while.

Hayley Raso was a workhorse, making seven crosses in open play, the second-highest by any Matildas player this Olympics, while Alanna Kennedy was rock-solid, blocking three shots, the most by any Matildas player in an Olympic Game since the beginning of 2016.

Kerr thanked Australian supporters for their support, noting that the players could feel the enthusiasm from home.

“We know you’re rooting for us back home, and it motivates us to do our best. Let’s go, Australia! I know you guys felt it today.”

On Monday, August 2 at 9:00 pm AEST, the Matildas will play Sweden in a semifinal match.
