Before the start of the 2021 United States Gymnastics Championships on June 3, gymnast Jade Carey displayed a spectacular tumbling pass on the floor.

Those three full twists and two backflips in a laid-out position make up a triple-twisting double back layout, also known as a laid-out triple-double or triple-double layout, as seen above.

Simone Biles, by way of contrast, performs the tucked version of this move—the triple-double that bears her name (three full twists and two backflips).

At podium training, Biles reportedly complimented and high-fived Carey after seeing the spectacular routine.

Biles reportedly exclaimed “that’s ridiculous!” when she saw it, according to NBC pundit and former gymnast Tim Daggett.

A few other gymnasts added their thoughts.

Olympic medalist Dominique Moceanu from 1996 tweeted, “Team USA Women continue to blaze the route BRAVO.” Aly Raisman, a two-time Olympian, penned, “What a challenge. Congrats!!”

The Japanese gymnast Kenzo Shirai was the inspiration for the naming of the “Shirai 3” move in men’s gymnastics.

Carey stands a good chance of having the move named after her if she manages to land it at a big International Gymnastics Federation competition, despite the fact that it is not yet recognised as a formal skill in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points.

(Note: Currently under the women’s Code of Points, the “Moors” is a double-twisting double back pattern that lacks one full twist short of Carey’s ability. Named after the Canadian gymnast Victoria Moors.

Carey has mathematically secured one of the United States’ two individual berths in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

A seat on the four-person squad is at jeopardy, but she is still determined to compete in the Olympic trials later this month.

Whether or not she performs the triple-double layout during her floor routines at the Nationals on June 4 or June 6 — or at the Olympics — it will forever be one of the most memorable gymnastic feats in history. Pardon us as we watch that video over and over again till we pass out.
