Caeleb Dressel of the United States of America broke the men’s 100-meter freestyle swimming Olympic record to earn his country’s first individual gold medal in the event.

US swimmer Caeleb Dressel sets a new world record in the men’s 100-meter freestyle, winning him the United States’ second gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Gold in the men’s 100-meter freestyle for swimmer Caeleb Dressel marked his first Olympic medal overall.

Defeating defending Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers of Australia by an only 0.06 seconds, the American swimmer made history. Olympic record timing of 47.02 seconds set by Dressel at the Tokyo Aquatics Center.

After clocking in at 47.44 seconds, ROC’s Kliment Kolesenikov was declared the bronze medalist.

Dressel, after winning his first Olympic gold medal in his individual event, commented, “It means a lot to win.” “I was well aware of the significance of the task at hand; prior to this, my only Olympic medals had been earned as part of a relay team.

“It’s not the same. I’m relieved to finally be able to say it out loud.

Things are really Different here; you have no one to rely on.

“There is no one around to get you out of the water. It’s not easy.”

Having qualified for the final with the fastest time in the world this year, Caeleb Dressel was the pre-race favourite.

It was a rematch of the 2016 Olympic final, which Chalmers won while Dressel placed sixth, adding an extra dose of drama to the event.

Dressel jumped out to an early lead thanks to his 0.60 second response time, the fastest of the three finalists.

From his third-place position at the 50-meter mark, Chalmers came charging back to threaten his American opponent in the last phases of the race.

With a final sprint towards the finish line, Dressel edged out defending champion Chalmers, who had to settle for second place.

Dressel has already won an Olympic gold medal. He was a member of the winning U.S. 4×100-meter freestyle relay team at Tokyo.

The 24-year-old has already won three gold medals at the Olympics, all in relay events.
