After finishing 15th in the all-round final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the bronze medalist from the 2016 Rio Games retires.

When G. Steingruber won the bronze medal in the vault competition at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, she made history as the first Swiss gymnast to ever win an Olympic medal.

It was Switzerland’s 49th gymnastics medal overall, and their first ever in women’s competition, which is quite the feat. The following year, at the World Championships in Montreal, G. Steingruber won bronze on the same apparatus.

The 27-year-old has won six European titles, the most recent of which she won on the vault in April at the European Championships in Basel while suffering from a thigh ailment.

In 2015, G. Steingruber won the European all-around title in Montpellier and two gold medals at the European Games in Baku. G. Steingruber summed up her career as “a blast” and “great time” on social media.

G. Steingruber said that she will “miss everything about” gymnastics.

G. Steingruber’s retirement decision comes only weeks after the whole coaching staff of the Swiss gymnastics women’s team quit in the wake of a damning study that found that they had mentally tortured players.
